Jesus Munoz, of Professional Restoration, hooks up hoses to dry out the Colorado Mills Mall on May 9, 2017 in Lakewood. The mall’s roof was damaged in the recent hail storm.
More than a week after a destructive hailstorm hit parts of the metro area, Colorado Mills remains closed because of extensive damage and safety concerns.
The regional mall in Lakewood, with more than 1 million square feet of retail space, including 10 anchor stores, was hammered by hail on May 8 and the storm caused extensive roof damage, broken glass, flooding, water and electrical damage.
The Target Superstore at the mall remains open, though anchors including the United Artists Theater and Dick’s Sporting Goods are closed.
“Our team is working hard to assess the scope of needed repairs, and we will share an anticipated reopening date once available,” Mills said in a Facebook post. “Our priority is to open our doors as quickly as possible.”
Retail tenants, employees and clean-up crews are working at the mall daily, cleaning up and pitching damaged items and equipment into large bins to pave the way for a reopening.
A definitive reopening date has not been announced.
